Botswana
Botswana is widely regarded as Africa’s finest safari destination for those seeking exclusivity, pristine wilderness, and exceptional wildlife. The Okavango Delta is the jewel – a vast inland waterway where floodwaters from the Angolan highlands fan out across the Kalahari sands, creating a labyrinth of crystal‑clear channels, lagoons, and palm‑dotted islands. The best way to explore the Delta is by mokoro (traditional dugout canoe), gliding silently past hippos, elephants, and colourful frogs, while birds like the African fish eagle call overhead. Game viewing in the Delta is outstanding – lion, leopard, wild dog, and buffalo thrive here. In the dry season, the Khwai and Moremi areas offer drives with incredible predator sightings. To the northeast lies Chobe National Park, home to the largest elephant population in Africa – often seen in herds of several hundred along the Chobe River. The vast salt pans of Makgadikgadi and Nxai form a surreal, lunar‑like landscape that hosts a dramatic zebra migration after rains, with predators in close pursuit. Botswana’s tourism model is low‑volume, high‑value – lodges are luxurious but eco‑sensitive, and access is usually by small plane. This comes at a higher price, but for travellers who want unspoiled wilderness, exclusive camps, and some of the best wildlife viewing on earth, Botswana is unmatched.
