Kenya
Kenya gave the world the word “safari” – and it still sets the gold standard for wildlife viewing. The Masai Mara National Reserve is the northern theatre of the Great Migration. From July to October, thousands of wildebeest and zebras cross the crocodile‑infested Mara River in dramatic, heart‑stopping river crossings that draw photographers from every corner of the globe. Year‑round, the Mara supports an astonishing density of lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. Amboseli National Park offers a postcard‑perfect view of Mount Kilimanjaro looming behind herds of elephants – a scene that has become iconic. For a different landscape, Samburu and Buffalo Springs reserves feature unique dry‑country species: the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, and Somali ostrich. Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha are famous for flamingos, rhinos, and boat trips. Beyond wildlife, Kenya’s coastline – Lamu, Mombasa, and Diani Beach – offers ancient Swahili stone towns, palm‑fringed sands, and excellent diving. Nairobi, the capital, has a world‑class elephant orphanage and giraffe centre. With excellent infrastructure, a wide range of lodges and camps, and the friendliest of guides, Kenya is perfect for families, first‑time safari travellers, and those seeking to combine wildlife with beach relaxation.
